Developed to tackle the challenge of premature spoilage, the new food-grade antimicrobial packaging offers a smarter and more effective way to keep food fresh for longer. The results show that the technology not only extends shelf-life but also helps maintain overall product quality by preserving taste, aroma, colour, texture, and visual appeal for a longer period. At the heart of the innovation is a solution to one of the primary causes of spoilage: bacterial adhesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tackling the root cause of spoilage: adhesion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microbial contamination starts at the microscopic level. Once bacteria adhere to a surface, they begin to absorb nutrients and multiply, accelerating the spoilage process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developed over 4 years by a team of dedicated scientists and recognised as a significant scientific breakthrough in the EU<\/a>, the new technology addresses this challenge at its source. Instead of trying to eliminate bacteria after colonisation, the solution prevents them from attaching in the first place by creating a barrier. Based on a trace element found naturally in the human body, the technology mimics the skin’s natural defence mechanisms, helping to prevent harmful bacteria from taking hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without the ability to stick to the surface, bacteria cannot grow, multiply, or contaminate the product. The result is a powerful layer of protection, built right into the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike coatings or active biocides, the technology is fully integrated into the film’s inner layer, which comes into contact with the product. The ions are locked in place, ensuring there is no leaching, washout, or impact on the food itself. The joint innovation has been designed to work seamlessly within existing packaging processes.
