Since its founding in 1927, Aerts Speculaas has perfected the art of speculaas, a spiced caramelised biscuit deeply rooted in Belgian culinary heritage. Using only the finest natural ingredients and a unique blend of spices, their biscuits are crafted with care and consistency. “We were looking for a supplier who could help us take a step forward,” said Karin Savooy, CEO of Aerts Speculaas. “With the investment in a horizontal flowpack line, we set out to upgrade our packaging to a fully recyclable solution that could be securely opened and closed again. To make this vision a reality, we needed a packaging partner who could deliver high-quality flowpack film that would run smoothly on our packaging line.”
Estiko’s team responded with a mono-material concept using 100% polypropylene (PP) film, complemented by a resealable open-close label made from the same PP material. This ensures the entire packaging can be recycled in a single waste stream, meeting PPWR recyclability targets while also catering to consumer demand for convenient, eco-friendly packaging.
The resealable label provides a clear additional benefit: once opened, the biscuits can be kept fresh over time, reducing food waste in the home. This not only adds value for the end consumer but further strengthens the brand’s sustainability story – preserving more than just the product but also the resources behind it.
